I personally think massive retouching (aka “mutilating”) of model photos actually has the opposite effect for some people: it makes them look so idealised that they become completely unobtainable. I mean, if they’re going to retouch photos that much, why even bother with the model at all? Why not hire some ex-Pixar employees to create photo-realistic (haha, there’s a nice contradiction) nude girls from the ground up?
It reminds me of the amount of post-production/autotuning so prevalent in pop music. Eventually the vocals and instruments are so compressed/messed with that it sounds like a robot created the track.
I suppose the most worrying thing about the practice in both fields of modelling and music is what it says about those that consume it. People being conditioned to think of this highly unrealistic crap as normal, thereby creating more insecurities in regular folks and shifting more units of whatever crap the “art” is being used to sell, i.e. unnecessary beauty products and poor quality pop music albums.
